Imaging Services

The Imaging Services Departments at Laurel Regional Hospital and Prince George’s Hospital Center provide a full range of diagnostic imaging services. Imaging exams are performed by licensed technologists providing high quality care. A board certified radiologist interprets the exams and sends a report to your healthcare provider. Specific exam preparation is provided during the scheduling process.

General Radiography

General x-ray exams are performed. Most x-ray exams do not require a scheduled appointment and can be completed on a walk in basis.

CT (CAT Scan)

CT services are provided using a 64-slice scanner providing cross sectional images of the body. Non-invasive, painless scans can be performed in minutes. CT examinations can aid in the diagnosis of disorders involving the digestive system organs, urinary system, appendix, liver, spleen, pancreas, and kidneys. Some exams require the use of contrast media.

Patients may be asked to drink oral contrast prior to the study to help visualize the organs in the abdomen. Specific preparation instructions will be provided during scheduling.

Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology provides images of the arteries supplying blood to different parts of the body. A thin catheter is used to inject contrast into the artery to be visualized using x-rays. A radiologist will discuss the procedure in detail and answer any questions before the exam.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine is used to evaluate the function of some internal organs by injecting a radioactive medication. After the injection, a waiting period is required for some exams to allow the medication to travel through the body. Images are then taken on a special camera and interpreted by a physician. The length of time for the exam will vary depending on the body part being examined.

Mammography

Mammography is a safe x-ray prodecure of the breast. It is a primary tool for early detection of breast cancer. The American College of Radiography recommends annual screening mammography exams for women over the age of 40.

Imaging Services provides screening mammography and diagnostic mammography exams.

  • Screening exams are performed on a routine basis for women who do not have any current disease symptoms.
  • Diagnostic mammography exams are performed on patients with clinical symptoms or those who have had an abnormal screening exam.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound or Sonography produces images of internal organs using sound waves instead of x-rays or radiation. It is used to examine organs including the gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidney, and bladder.

Ultrasound is also used to monitor the development and health of the embryo or fetus. The length of the exam may vary and patients may be required to fast or drink water prior to the examine depending on the area of the body being examined.

Scheduling

To schedule an appointment, call Laurel Regional Hospital at 301-725-4300 or Prince George’s Hospital Center at 301-618-3341. Please have your physician’s order available.

MRI

MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses a high field strength magnet and radio waves to produce images of internal organs and structures. MRI is very useful for examining the central nervous system, internal organs, and blood vessels.

MRI Services are provided through Alliance MRI at both Laurel Regional Hospital and Prince George’s Hospital Center. Day and evening appointments are available Monday through Friday. Saturday appointments are also available. For questions or to schedule an appointment, please call 301-618-2090.
