Happy Holidays from the “Rachel H. Pemberton Senior Health Center!”
The Support Our Seniors (SOS) Organization and the Senior Health Center hosted their annual Holiday Party on Thursday, December 8, 2011 at the Gwendolyn Britt Senior Activity Center in No. Brentwood, Md. Over 150 patients and guests were treated to a delicious meal while being entertained by Chris Bock’s holiday music selections; and enjoying the talents of special guest pianists and singers Mr. Roosevelt Smith and Ms. Sheila Davis, and members of the Dupont Park Seventh Day Adventist Church – Ms. Jerri McLean who touched our hearts with her singing inspiring spirituals, Ms. Annie Ruth Thomas who eloquently recited a poem entitled “In the Morning” by Paul Laurence Dunbar; and Mr. Paul Greene who sang “One More Day” in his remarkable bass voice. All present were moved!
The staff and patients would like to thank State Delegate Jolene Ivey who spearheaded the effort to name the Senior Health Center after its Founding Mother and grass-roots community organizer, Ms. Rachel H. Pemberton of No. Brentwood who, along with other seniors, worked for many months with Prince George’s County elected officials to get the Senior Health Center established in June 1974. With over 38 years of public service and community activism Ms. Pemberton, age 95, has accomplished many victories including getting buses to take seniors shopping and to medical appointments, establishing a legal aid service for elderly in the County, supporting legislation to reduce house taxes for low income seniors; and many other accomplishments that improved the health and well-being of senior citizens in the County.
Also present to honor Ms. Pemberton with flowers, citations and proclamations were Rushern Baker, III, Prince George’s County Executive, State Senator Victor Ramirez, State Senator Joanne Benson, State Delegate Michael Summers, County Councilman Will Campos, Mayor Petrella Robinson of No. Brentwood; and representatives from the offices of U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski, U.S. Congressmen Chris Van Hollen and Elijah E. Cummings. The leadership of Dimensions Michael Jacobs, Michael Jenifer and Singh Taneja were present when John O’Brien presented a plaque to Ms. Pemberton which read “Rachel H. Pemberton Senior Health Center”. Ms. Pemberton, with tears in her eyes thanked everyone for the honor and stated she was “in shock”. She said it was a wonderful, incredible surprise that she hasn’t gotten over yet. Ms. Pemberton stated “I just thought I was doing the right thing and I still want to make things better for seniors.”
The Center would like to thank the management of Dimensions Healthcare System, the members of the Dupont Park Seventh Day Adventist Church in particular Joseph and Gwendolyn Coleman, Ms. TJ Ash, Mistress of Ceremonies; First Baptist Church of No. Brentwood who provided parking; and the Gwendolyn Britt Senior Center staff under the leadership of Ms. Regina Jackson for hosting our event and making it a wonderful time for all. Please come visit the “Rachel H. Pemberton Senior Health Center” – all are welcome!

Early alert- The Cerner Laboratory computer system downtime
Early alert- The Cerner Laboratory computer system will undergo a major upgrade on January 10. This will cause a 12 hour continuous downtime from 10 AM until 10 PM for file conversion and testing. Detailed nursing unit instructions will be sent in the coming weeks to provide information on how orders, specimens, and lab reports will be handled. Physicians will also get a notice on how to access Pathology and Laboratory reports during this extended downtime. The Laboratory will work toward maintaining an acceptable turnaround time but lab operations will be slower without computers and automation during this period. We will minimize the impact. Please pass the word and distribute this notice. Thank you.
