New State of the Art Laboratory Technology at Prince George’s Hospital CenterApril 1, 2009 Cheverly, Maryland – Prince George’s Hospital Center has enhanced its laboratory capabilities to respond to physician requests for blood tests with new equipment complete with robotics.
On April 22, 2009, laboratory administrators unveiled the new automation systems at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by laboratory and hospital employees. This new system, MPA 7 system with cobas® 6000 analyzers, totally automates the process from test order receipt to laboratory result. The system analyzes blood samples for > 60 routine and specialty chemistry tests ordered by physicians.
“This equipment will make our lab much more efficient,” said Singh Taneja, Executive Vice President. “This system provides broad testing capability to continue to enhance our practice of laboratory medicine for years to come.” “This is just another step in our commitment to continuously improve our quality of patient care, while providing our medical staff with the tools they need.” This highly automated system consolidates more than 95% of routine chemistry testing, therefore requiring fewer analyzers, which optimizes lab staff efficiency.
“We receive more than 2000 test requests per day, and that demand will continue to grow,” said Michele Best, Director of Laboratories. “Therefore, we found ourselves needing to accomplish more every day, and it was beginning to take a toll on our personnel resources. With increasing demand, we knew we needed to make improvements in order to maintain our goal of producing fast and accurate test results.”
Upgrading the laboratory was a tremendous task, however, according to Michele Best, the transition was very smooth. “Whenever you take on this type of project, you worry how it will affect the daily workload and if it will slow down the process,” said Best. “However, the entire process was completed with minimum disruption thanks in large part to our partnership with Roche Diagnostics. The Dimensions/Roche team kept everything moving on schedule without interfering with our normal day-to-day processes.
