Prince George’s Hospital and WRTC to Celebrate Donate Life Month

April 9, 2009

CHEVERLY, MD (April 9, 2009)—There are more than 101,000 people currently waiting for a desperately-needed organ transplant to save their lives – enough to fill FedEx Field to standing-room only capacity – and Prince George’s Hospital Center has made immense strides this year to ensure that lives are saved as the result of organ and tissue donation. To celebrate the hospital’s ongoing efforts during National Donate Life Month in April and throughout the year, Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC) is honoring the hospital and its organ and tissue donors by holding a remembrance ceremony. The ceremony will take place on April 16th at 2pm outside the hospital’s main entrance (3000 Hospital Drive, Cheverly, MD). During the ceremony, two Yoshino Cherry trees will be planted to honor the generosity of the hospital’s organ and tissue donors.

“These beautiful trees are symbols to all of us of the heroic patients and families who have given the gift of life through organ and tissue donation, said Elizabeth Spencer, WRTC’s Director of Hospital Services and Professional Education. They also symbolize the unwavering dedication of Prince George’s Hospital Center to patients, their families and the transplant recipients who receive these precious, life-saving organs and tissues.

People whose lives have been touched by donation or those who wish to show their support for donation are invited to attend the ceremony.

There are approximately 2,000 individuals in the Washington, DC, area alone waiting for a transplant. By the end of this week, three area patients will die because an organ was not available for transplant in time to save their lives. People in this area can help end the wait and save lives by registering to become organ and tissue donors in person at their local MVA or at www.DonateLifeMaryland.org. For more information about donation, visit www.beadonor.org.

The Yoshino Cherry trees, mulch and planting soil have been generously donated for the ceremony by Dennison Landscaping and Nursery, located in Fort Washington, MD. Visit them on the web at www.dennisonlandscaping.com.

Founded in 1986, Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC) is the federally-designated organ procurement organization (OPO) for the metropolitan Washington, DC, area. It is the non-profit agency responsible for recovering and distributing organs and tissues used in lifesaving and life-enhancing transplants as well as for far-reaching medical research and therapy. WRTC covers all of the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and three suburban counties in Maryland. WRTC serves approximately 4.75 million people, 44 hospitals and six transplant centers. It is the mission of WRTC to recover organs and tissues by preserving every donation option, excelling in recovery and placement, and providing care for donors and their families. WRTC’s vision is healing communities through organ and tissue donation.
