Emergency/Trauma

When Seconds Count...

The first time many of us experience a hospital is during a medical emergency, when it is important to have the best care possible in the critical minutes. Our Emergency/Trauma Departments are staffed by highly qualified board certified physicians, as well as dedicated, experienced nurses, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We also have specialists on call whenever needed, including:

  • Cardiologists
  • Orthopedists
  • Ophthalmologists
  • Obstetricians and Gynecologists
  • Pediatricians/Neonatologists
  • Plastic Surgeons
  • Neurologists
  • Psychiatrists and other Mental Health Professionals
  • Addiction Treatment Specialists

Support services, which vary by facility, include:

  • Diagnostic medical imaging services (radiology) including MRI and CT scans
  • Nuclear medicine testing
  • Laboratory and blood bank
  • Cardiac testing including a cardiac catherization lab and angiography testing
  • Critical care unit with state-of-the-art monitoring equipment
  • Operating rooms
  • 24-hour neonatal, anesthesiology and medical-surgical physician coverage
  • Physical Rehab Center accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities
  • Mental health and addiction services
  • Social work/discharge planning services
  • Sleep Disorders Center/seizure disorders evaluations
  • Wound Care Center for treatment of chronic, non-healing wounds

The most current therapy, including the use of blood clot dissolving drugs, is provided for heart attack victims. Although most care is rendered to adults and children for relatively minor injuries (cuts, burns, sprains, broken bones, bruises, rashes, fevers, infections, etc.), about one quarter of those seen are treated for traumas, severe lacerations, heart attacks and other life-threatening conditions.

Our Trauma Center is nationally renowned for its 97% save rate.

You may have seen our Trauma Center on the national news. Our survival rate is among the best in the nation, and our trauma center is one of the busiest in the state of Maryland.

We have also developed and host the Shock Trauma Mentor Program, which is nationally recognized, for young people to observe the hard realties of what violence, drugs, alcohol, and dangerous driving can do to the human body.
