You may have seen our Trauma Center on the national news. Our survival rate is among the best in the nation, and our trauma center is one of the busiest in the state of Maryland.

Prince George's Hospital Center was founded in 1944 as an acute care teaching hospital and referral center, and has been serving residents of Prince George's County ever since.  The Prince George's Hospital Center Emergency Department is one of the busiest emergency departments in Southern Maryland.  Every day we care for patients of all ages - from newborns to patients in their 100's.  Every day we care for patients with the broadest range of illnesses, from unmet primary care needs of our community to acute emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, or asthma, where every second matters.

Our emergency department has 23 acute-care treatment beds including 8 private acute-care treatment rooms, a 4-bed resuscitation area, an observation unit, and two trauma rooms.  Our separate & uot;Fast-Track& uot; ambulatory/walk-in care area consists of 4 triage/registration rooms, 5 treatment rooms and two bays for suturing and wound care.   The Prince George's Emergency Department acute care areas and fast-track areas are staffed 24-hours a day by physicians who are board certified in the specialty of Emergency Medicine, as well as by physician assistants and emergency medicine residents from the George Washington University Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

Prince George's Hospital Center is a state designated Level II Trauma Center.  It is the second busiest trauma center in the state of Maryland seeing over 3, 000 trauma patients per year.   The Trauma Team consists of specially Trauma Surgeons, Physician Assistants, Trauma RN’s/Techs, etc…24 hours per day, 7 days per week to provide rapid emergency response to critically injured patients.  This specialized care is continued throughout the patient’s hospital stay.

We are an ambulance receiving facility as well as a Medical Control Base Station, providing online medical direction to EMS providers in our region.  We have a comprehensive Cardiac Care Program including 24-hour cardiac catheterization and open-heart surgery capabilities for all acute heart emergencies - the only hospital in Prince George's County that provides these services.  Our intensive services pavilion houses 10 operating suites, a 24-bed intensive care unit, catheterization labs and endoscopy suites.  Each year more than 10,000 surgeries are performed by surgeons in nearly all of the adult surgical subspecialties.  Prince George's has one of the busiest labor and delivery suites and the only designated Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Southern Maryland.  Our facility also staffs the only hospital-based sexual assault center in the Metro area and offers both medical treatment and counseling free of charge to victims of sexual assault.
